Hiking Trails

ANVIL ROCK

  • Difficulty: Easy, though you gain about 600 feet of elevation.

  • Distance: About 1 mile, round trip.

  • Located: 3 Miles North of Nome


KING MOUNTAIN

  • Difficulty: Easy, though you do gain about 900 feet of elevation. There are steep areas but no cliffs.

  • Distance: about 3 miles round trip.

  • Located: 7-1/2 miles NNE of Nome.

 

NEWTON PEAK

  • Difficulty: Very easy and relatively safe, even for little kids, though you do gain 500 feet elevation. The spaces are wide open.

  • Distance: about 3 miles round trip.

  • Located: 5 miles NNE of Nome


MIOCENE DITCH

  • Difficulty: Easy. You gain about 200 feet elevation. Some of the walking may be swampy, depending upon the year.

  • Distance: About 3 miles round trip.

  • Located: about 15 air miles due north of Nome, approx. 64° 44’ 15" N., 165° 23’

DOROTHY Falls

  • Difficulty: Easy. However, our preferred route will require you to gain about 700 feet of elevation.

  • Distance: About 3 miles round-trip. Requires river crossing.

  • Located: about mile 24 of the Kougarok Road, 64° 49’ 50" N, 165° 13’ 15" W


COPPER CREEK

  • Difficulty: Easy. However, a creek crossing is required.

  • Distance: about 2 miles round trip.

  • Located: at mile 28 of the Kougarok Road


THRILLING KIGLUAIK VIEW

  • Difficulty: Moderate. You gain over 2,000 feet of elevation. Your destinations have steep, sudden 1,200-foot dropoffs on the north side.

  • Distance: About 4 miles round-trip. Plan on 4 to 6 hours.

  • Located: Mile 27 of the Kougarok Road


SINUK RIVER HEADWATERS

  • Difficulty: Moderate. You gain 2,000 feet of elevation. Requires two river crossings.

  • Distance: About 7 miles round trip.

  • Located: Mile 26 of the Kougarok Road,


GLACIAL LAKE

  • Difficulty: Moderate. Plan to spend all day on this one. You gain about 1,000 feet elevation.

  • Distance: About 10 miles, round trip. This trip will give you a nice taste of gold country.

  • Located: Drive the Teller Road to the Cripple River bridge. 64° 40’ 36" N., 165° 44’ 23" W.


MOUNT DISTIN

  • Difficulty: Moderate. The elevation gain is about 1,700 feet. Figure on six hours. There are steep dropoffs.

  • Distance: About 5 miles, round trip

  • Located: Drive the Glacier Creek Road to its crossing of Goldbottom Creek, approx. 64° 44’ 40" N, 165° 23’ 45"W.
